Kenneth Muguna's goal in the first half was all Gor Mahia needed to bag another three vital points as they hosted Zoo Kericho in Kisumu on Saturday in a league clash.
A much dominated game by the home team however, failed to realise more goals as Zoo Kericho’s defense worked hard to contain pressure.
Striker Jacques Tuyisenge converted Karim Nizigiyamana’s cross on the third minute of the game but the effort was ruled for an off-side cutting short the celebrations that were already on by the home fans.
Winger Godfrey Walusimbi was at it on the 13th minute with a well-placed pass by Nzigiyimana but his attempt to get on the score sheet went wide giving the Zoo side a breathing space.
Muguna, the 2016 KPL footballer of the year could have been on target with a free kick moments later, but his effort was parried off by hard working Zoo keeper Vincent Misikhu.
The home team pressed harder upfront and on the 42nd minute, Muguna weaved his way past Zoo players to nail a superb goal from 18 yards with Zoo keeper's frantic efforts not saving the day.
Second half was not quite busy in terms of goals as the home knocked the ball around to the excitement of fans who thronged the venue to support their team.
Nixon Omulanda of Zoo Kericho received a red card following second booking after tackle on Miguna and that meant Zoo side had to do a better part of the final half with one man less.
1-0 it ended and that marked a perfect start by Gor Mahia in their quest to achieve the best in the league this season.
With six points after two matches, Gor Mahia is now leading the log with a gap of 2 points after Saturday’s Kenyan Premier League results.
