The last derby of the season pitting Gor Mahia against arch-rivals AFC Leopards is once again with us, this Sunday 19th May 2019.
Pitting the strongest community clubs in Kenya against each other, Mashemeji derby has never disappointed since it comes with unmatched passion and unpredictable results making it one of the most astonishing football events in the KPL calendar.
Since 2016, Gor Mahia has been having a rollercoaster against AFC Leopards with almost all victory results going to the K’ogalo basket.
Last time AFC Leopards celebrated a win against Gor Mahia was back in March 2016 during Frank Nuttal’s tenure as Gor Mahia coach, k’Ogalo lost 1:0 in that game played at the Moi Sports Center – Kasarani.
No side has ever contemplated that they could be the loser in this derby, which qualifies to be described as Kenya’s “El classico”.
The last whistle is always the determinant on who will have the bragging rights. The two teams have the most passionate and flamboyant supporters in the KPL.
It will be song and dance on the streets of Nairobi for long before the match and much longer after the match for the winning team’s fans.
Apart from three players who are out of action after picking injuries in previous games, Hassan Oktay has in his hands’ strong team for the Sunday assignment.
Three strikers are available for selection when only one midfielder (Hassim Sempala) and left back (Shafik Batambuze) are down nursing injuries. Striker Dennis Oliech had a fracture on his forearm and has been ruled out of action for at least 6 weeks.
Regular in the first XI include Tuyisenge, Mustafa and Kipkirui who are fit for the task ahead. Kahata, Wendo and Muguna are also available to man the midfield at its best distribution form. Captain Shakava, Onyango Joash and Otieno Philemon are some of the players expected in the defense line with more players available for selection.
Oktay might bring in a surprise when naming his line-up. He might re-introduce the same formula that won the derby 2:0 at the same venue (Kasarani) least season. Boniface Omondi and Benard Ondiek were on the score sheet with Wanyonyi being included in the defense.
The kick-off time is 4:15 pm at Moi international Sports Center – Kasarani tomorrow Sunday 19th May 2019. Be there.
