If there is a game that would be etched in the memory of football fans forever, then it is K’Ogalo’s match against Sofapaka played on Sunday 19th October 2014 at the Kenyatta Stadium – Machakos.
Gor Mahia needed a win to clinch KPL title for the second consecutive season with one game at hand. On the other end, a win for Sofapaka would give them a much needed glimmer of hope for the title and stretch the title race to the last matches of the season.
With Machakos stadium full to capacity, K’Ogalo’s loyal fans “The Green Army” were sure the title would be clinched at the Machakos County’s premier sports arena and we’re prepared for massive celebrations.
K’Ogalo had won 2:1 in the first leg played at the City Stadium in Nairobi on the 10th of May.
This particular win gave Mayienga the confidence of collecting maximum points from Batoto ba Mungu (Children of God) as they are nicknamed.
The game started on a high note and break neck speed. The massive pressure on the pitch and a fully charged green army on the stands was too much to bear for Sofapaka as k’Ogalo’s first goal came in the 2nd minute of the game from an own goal by Sofapaka defender Eugine Asike causing a rupture of celebrations by Gor Mahia fans. It was song and dance of unimaginable proportions as a feeling of invincibility overwhelmed the K’ogalo fans. The celebrations, however, did not last long as Fiston Rizak equalized 16 minutes later for Sofapaka.
Green Army loyalists were still trying to find their voices to urge their team on when the unthinkable happened, Sofapaka scored the second goal and K’ogalo fans were silenced. Indeed when it rains it pours, Sofapaka would score another goal and the Gor fans would have to bear the pain watching Sofapaka players celebrate right in front of them.
What became of that game will be told for generations to come K’ogalo went down 3:2 with the second goal scored by the flamboyant midfielder Godfrey Kizito.
Gor Mahia won the League in their last match while Sofapaka went ahead to win GoTV shield sending them to the CAF Confederation Cup.
The two soccer giants are meeting this Sunday in what could be the game to decides on who will clinch the KPL title.
Any positive result by Gor Mahia will mean a wider gap between them and second placed Sofapaka. This could see the beginning of early celebrations by the defending champions. A win by Sofapaka would significantly reduce the gap between the two sides and take the title race down to the wire.
What is more interesting will be the kind of footwork on the pitch, and pulsating football that will be watched live across the country. Hassan Oktay plans to field his best squad as John Baraza is expected to respond with his finest.
Football fever has gripped the lakeside city of Kisumu as it is all about the Sunday game. It is a game that every soccer lover would love to watch.
